One could equally say we can’t afford our current defense spending or healthcare, or just that deficits are acceptable for sovereign nations. $1T out of the US’s $17T GDP keeps millions out of poverty, but whether that’s too much or too little is orthogonal to this article. I claim that a shift to basic income could be accomplished with minimal changes to overall redistribution, relative to our current system.
