Another way that Uber avoids potential bias is in omitting tipping from their app. As they wrote this morning, tipping can motivate drivers to favor areas more likely to tip, which tend to be wealthier and whiter. It also hurts black drivers, who studies show are tipped 1/3 less than white drivers (by both black and white passengers). By my estimates, this may result in black Lyft drivers (where 70% of riders tip) earning $2,500 less than white counterparts.
